Interviews can feel nerve-racking, especially if it's your first one.

Learn how the STARR technique can help you answer questions clearly and show employers what you can do.

What will they ask me?

Interviewers just want to get to know you, what you like, and if you’ve got any experience in relevant settings, whether through school, hobbies, or your free time. You might be asked questions like:

These questions can feel difficult if you're not prepared, but they’re important to think about before your interview because your answers will give them an idea on how you might behave at work and if you’re a good fit for the job.

That's where the STARR technique can help.

What is STARR?

STARR is a simple structure that helps you answer interview questions clearly and confidently.

It stands for:

Using STARR helps employers understand not only what happened, but how you think, solve problems and learn from experiences.

Let’s take a look at STARR in practice.

Click on the examples below to see how you would answer some example interview questions. Top Tip: Most of your answer should focus on your Actions. Interviewers want to know what you did, not just what happened.

Preparing your own STARR stories

Before an interview, it can be helpful to prepare two or three examples that show different skills. Don't worry if you only have a few examples. A single experience can often be adapted to answer different questions about teamwork, communication, problem-solving or leadership.

If you're not sure what examples to prepare, start by looking at the job description. If the skills aren't listed, try searching online to find out what skills are important for that role.

Then think about times you've demonstrated those skills at school, through hobbies, volunteering, sport, caring responsibilities, part-time work, or anywhere else.

When preparing examples, ask yourself:

You can then adapt these examples to answer a variety of interview questions.

Confidence comes from preparation

Nobody expects you to have years of experience when you're applying for your first job. What employers are often looking for is potential, enthusiasm and evidence that you can learn and contribute.

Preparing a few STARR examples in advance can make interviews feel much less intimidating and help you communicate your skills more effectively.

The more you practice, the more natural your answers will become.
